It was during these junior cup challenges that
Weller tasted the sweet taste of victory in
competition golf. A taste that she would savor
well into her later years.
Weller’s tenacity and commitment to excellence
paid off. After a stellar high school career,
Amber was recruited by Savannah
College of Art and Design golf
team. Although Amber had applied and been accepted
by several well known and prominent schools,
she chose Savannah due to her equal passion
and love of the arts.
Amber continued her assault on golf immortality
in Georgia. It wasn’t long before Amber
validated the school’s choice of Amber
being their first ever women’s golf recruit.
Below are some of Amber’s personal accomplishments
as well as what the team achieved during her
career:
- 2002-03 NCAA Division III All-American Scholar
Team selected by the National Golf Coaches
Association
- Received the Athletic Director's Award
for Academic Excellence as she had the top
GPA (3.97) for a graduating female student-athlete.
- 2004 Daktronics-NAIA Women's Golf All-America
Scholar-Athlete Team
- Selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District
III College Division Women's At-Large First
Team.
- Weller helped SCAD to their first-ever berth
to the NAIA National Championship where the
team finished in 13th place.
- Earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in
illustration
During her college career she would return
to Rhode Island and during her summer breaks
she workded at Point Judith Country Club where
she focused on golf shop and outdoor operations
and continued to hone her game. For 2005, Amber
will be the new assistant golf professional
at Potowamut Country Club in Warwick, Rhode
Island.
I asked Amber who her biggest golf influences
are. I expected anything from Annika Sorenstam
to Phil Mickelson, but I wasn’t expecting
what Amber answered, ‘my competitors.’
Other items that capture Amber’s attention
and interest: “I enjoy watching tour player
swings. I am also fascinated by the mental aspects
of the game, and I am particularly influenced
by Dr. Bob Rotella. As a competitive golfer
it is incredibly important to remained focused
for all 18 holes.”
When I asked Amber what her immediate goals
are, she indicated that “My primary goal
is to keep getting better and I want to play
at the professional level and hopefully on national
level. I will be teaching and giving lessons
at the club. I like how my swing is improving
and I been working out at the gym so my physical
conditioning is getting better. I can’t
stop playing competitive golf. I need to keep
active and top of my game.
My primary teacher is Dave Marcotte of Point
Judith Country Club. However, because I have
been working in the Eagle Quest golf Dome, sometimes
will get a quick ‘swing tip’ from
some of the area’s best and most respected
professionals such as Larry Demers and Phil
Fecteau since they too are teaching in the Golf
Dome…but Dave remains to be my primary
teacher.
But really, who is Amber Weller? In my opinion,
Amber is the modern day equivalent of a renaissance
woman. If you quickly look at her accomplishments,
her accolades and her interests you will easily
see that she is an academic, an artist and yes
finally an athlete.
The members at Potowomut Golf Club are indeed
fortunate to have such a fine, young professional
at their disposal. RhodyGolf.com
is proud to be able to do this interview and
highlight the best that Rhode
Island Golf has to offer and we
wish Amber the best in all of her future endeavors!
